Grand Torino

Walt Kowalski is a widower who holds onto his prejudices despite the changes in his Michigan neighborhood and the world around him. Kowalski is a grumpy, tough-minded, unhappy an old man, who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1972 Gran Torino he keeps in mint condition. When his neighbor Thao, a young Hmong teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Thao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them from the gangs that infest their neighborhood.

My friends and I went and saw Grand Torino last night. I wasn't that excited to see it but was like "alright I'll go." Holy crap am I glad I did!! This movie was so amazing, Clint did it again! The movie as so heartfelt and raw. It is now in my top two movies of the year!

Katy Perry & The Daylights

Trav and me before the show

Travis and I went to Katy Perry's concert tonight at the Showbox. The evening started out with Trav and I meeting up at the Green Room for drinks and dinner before the show at the bar next to the Showbox, this allowed us to skip the line into the show. We had a great time mocking people as they arrived for the show; couple in their 50's reclaiming their youth in their "hip" clothes taking a limo to the show. Young children trying to cut the line only to be told by the door man to move it to the end of the line, and my favorite 2 girls who knew that they were hot so they could come into the bar right before the Showbox opened (the Green Room was PACKED by this time) were also told to go to the end of the line. These girls had never heard this before in their lives apparently and decided to just stand by the door and wait for the crowd to thin out. I know that they got in at sometime because I saw them later in the evening.

Into the Showbox
Trav and I decided to sit in the bar even though we could have had stood right in front of the stage, we decided that we would rather sit and not fight the crowds for the 4 hours we would be there. We got great seats and were ready to enjoy the show. Then our new best friend arrived to sit next to us, the only thing I can say about him is that he did give us plenty of comic relief throughout the night. First up we got to watch his stuff about 14 times while he ran to the bar, the bathroom, to look at posters, and who knows what else, more on him to come.

On to the show.
Up first was a band I had never heard of but thoroughly enjoyed, The Daylights. As we rocked out to their cool grooves our new BF leaned over to me and asked “Is the lead singer Ashton Kutcher? Ha Ha Ha” I politely smiled and then leaned over to Trav to tell what the idiot said; we both got a good laugh. We continued to rock out to The Daylights, after their great set I went to the lobby to buy their CD. While I was down there buying the waiting in line the band came up to sing autographs and chat with fans, and I will admit I fell a little in love with them. I spoke with Ricky first and asked him which of their 2 CDs I should by then had him sign it. Then I got Ran to sign it along with Svend, where I talked to Ricky again then got a picture with him, where it told me that “I smelled great”. Yep its official I’m going to start stalking them.

The Daylights rockin' it

Me and my new crush

While I was off with my new loves Trav was having fun with our BF, he told Travis that the band was a cross between U2 and The Jonas Brothers (I’m surprised that a bolt of lightening didn’t come out of the sky to strike him down for saying The Jonas Brothers in the same sentence as U2) then he asked him to watch his seat again.

Katy doing her thing

Now it is time for the main event (even though I was completely happy with the show so far). Katy came out and did a great show; it was the first stop on her Hello Katy! Tour, she even had her own huge cat head on the stage. Katy rocked the house. Trav and I did discover a huge drawback to sitting in the bar; people are huge douches and just stand around drinking and chatting like there isn’t a show going on 30 feet in front of them. Seriously there were times when Katy was talking that I couldn’t hear her over all the assholes chatting it up around us, I don’t know why they didn’t just save their money and drink in their living rooms with MTV on in the background. Katy ended the show with a I Kissed a Girl that ended with her standing half in the audience and the crowd going crazy (if I can figure out how to edit the video I took I will put it up here). Then our new BF almost ruined it for Trav by telling us “That is all she had to do for me that was a tour de force performance!”

We had a great time at the show and I have a new band I love (and a crush) all in all it was an Awesome night!

I love this show!

How I Met Your Mother was totally Awesome tonight!! I laughed so hard, everyone should watch this legendary show!!

"We should buy a bar."

"Dude, the name of our bar...Puzzles."

Watch it here!

While I didn't enjoy the movie Cocktail I love a good montage!

I wonder if this works?

As one of it's attributes it claims.
Easily make a low-calorie root beer float (no ice cream needed)!
A slush root beer is not the same thing as a root beer float, sorry it needs ice cream!!
The instructional video is off the hook! I want one just to watch it become slush!

Love that price

I love that I have now found a totally cheap drink to order from Tully’s!! I don't always get something there but I now have a drink that is $0.99!!! I usually get a Grande Breakfast Blend Tea with only 1 tea bag and a little room, that usually comes to $1.10 after my passport discount of $0.50 but today I brought my own mug and got an addition $0.10 off so now my drink comes to under a dollar!!! Not only am I saving money I'm also saving the environment!

Whoa

Because of Travis I just spent the last hour adding labels to all my previous post, now you can search topics like; Christmas, family, friends, Adventure Club, Irritated.
I love getting paid time and a half to not do work!

Really!?!

Seriously people come on it is January 19th!!! It is time to take down the damn Christmas lights! I know that it is a pain to put them up and you want to get the most out of them, but you put them up the week before Thanksgiving and I’m pretty sure that 2 months is enough time to enjoy them. So please get of your lazy ass and take them down or if that is too much work for the love of all that is holy stop turning them on!!!

I hate Saturday!

Today is sucking hardcore! Only in my world does a promotion mean that I have to work 1 weekend a month, when before I worked no weekends a month!! So this weekend is the first weekend I have to work and it has started out great! First off it is freezing outside and I had to wait for a bus for about 20 minutes out in the aforementioned freezing cold!! I was worried that my hands were going to freeze and fall off even though I was wearing gloves! When the bus finally arrives as I go to get on and swipe my bus pass I totally fall down!! I think that it was so cold outside that my legs froze and I couldn’t walk up stairs properly. So there I am totally on the ground of the bus my shoe has falling of and my toes are all twisted and I’m totally embarrassed cuz I just hardcore bit it, and the bus driver looks at me like nothing happened and doesn’t even say anything to me, not even “whoa nice fall”, or “are you alright” nothing! I pick up my pride and my body and I sit down and ride the rest of the way to work. As I get off I don’t fall flat on my face Thank God, I think my muscles warmed up! Now I’m at work and my toes on my left foot kind of sting and I’m not looking forward to the rest of the day. And to top of this great start to my “weekend” I hate my stupid new haircut! It is high school all over again and I have a stupid Dutch boy hair cut that I 100% didn’t ask for! I said I wanted about 2 inches cut off so that it dusted my shoulders, not 2 inches about my shoulders so that it dusts my earlobes!!! Plus I have to listen to a pissed off baby cry it's head off, I wonder if it fell getting on the bus too?!?!

I need a maid

I have been trying to clean my apartment for about 3 weeks! I get like 2 parts done and then I stop cuz I get bored of cleaning. So now my apartment is in various stages of cleaning. Some of the dishes are done, the laundry is done, folded and waiting to be put away, the vacuum is out waiting to be used. Apparently 2009 is not a clean year! I know I shouldn't have let the New Year find my apartment messy!

I can't stop!

I love my new hot air popper that I got for Christmas(I got 2 actually 1 from my bother Mike and one from my friend Carmel I took one back). I literally can't stop making popcorn tonight, I just keep make more and more!

My Golden Globe wrap up

This is the first year that I’m almost completely pleased with the winners of the Golden Globes. There was only one glaring error made in the list of winners.

Movie- Drama
Winner-Slumdog Millionaire

I thought all 5 movies were excellent and I would have been happy with an of them winning, I was really wanting The Reader (so people would go out and see this great movie) or Benjamin Button because this movie touched my heart, but I also enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire so I was happy with them winning.

Movie – Comedy or Musical
Winner – Vicky Cristina Barcelona

I ecstatic Mamma Mia! didn’t win!! Out of the group I have only seen Burn After Reading (awful I so don’t get the Cohen brothers). In Bruges, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Happy-Go-Lucky are in my netflix queue. You couldn’t pay me to watch Mamma Mia! I am not a fan of Meryl so this movie looks like torture plus I don’t want to watch people attempt and fail at singing.

Best Actor – Drama
Winner – Mickey Rourke

Are you kidding me!?!? He beat out Leo’s pain and rage, Frank’s bravado and demeanor, Sean’s heart and spirit, and Brad’s depth and wonder. This one still angers me!

Best Actress – Drama
Winner – Kate Winslet

OMG I am so happy!! I love Kate and it’s about time she got some GG love! If I didn’t love Kate some much I really wanted Anne to win for her amazing performance.

Best Actor – Comedy or Musical
Winner – Colin Farrell

I have nothing to say about this movie as this is the only category I haven’t seen any of.

Best Actress – Comedy or Musical
Winner – Sally Hawkins

Who?? I did enjoy her speech though she seemed very genuine. I was yet again thrilled Meryl Streep didn’t win.

Best Supporting Actor
Winner - Heath Ledger

Seriously who else was going to win this one? Heath was magnificent, and it is sad that he isn’t around to get his much deserved accolades.
Best Supporting Actress
Winner – Kate Winslet

Hell ya!! I love that this started out the evening; she was so amazing in the role!

I’m not recapping the rest of the awards but I must say I love Tina Fey and her use of one of my favorite phrases “SUCK IT!” especially in an award acceptance speech, Tina you rock!!

More Movies Movies Movies

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be. Benjamin Button is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

I immensely enjoyed this movie. It lived up to be everything I wanted it to be. It was a well told epic story that I was captivated by from the moment it started. Cate and Brad were magnificent in this movie and Brad’s portrayal of Benjamin Button was perfect.

Revolutionary Road
April and Frank Wheeler are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. Their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job, and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. As their relationship deteriorates into an endless cycle of squabbling, jealousy and recriminations, their trip and their dreams of self-fulfillment are thrown into jeopardy.

This movie was so well made it was uncomfortable to watch at times because of the raw emotions that were being shown. Kate and Leo put their hearts into these roles and it paid off in these intense performances. While I wouldn’t want to live on Revolutionary Road, I found this to be an excellent movie, sad and painful but excellent.

The Wrestler
Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey.Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life -- trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy "The Ram" back into his world of wrestling.

The plot summary of this movie makes it seem much better than it was. I found the idea of the movie and the underling emotions to be a great premises but I found the delivery to be lacking. I don’t understand the accolades for Mickey Rourke performance it seemed to me that he was just playing Mickey Rourke with a little more heart. I thought the best performance was Evan Rachel Wood’s she had a scene that was heart wrenching.

Today in a nutshell

Today my problems are:

  • I’m tired.
  • I am grumpy.
  • My hair is wacky; because I went to bed with wet hair then I woke up late and had no time to control it.
  • I don’t like my outfit but it is one of the only things I have clean, so there ya go.
  • I have an irrational feeling of wanting to punch people who say stupid things to me (okay I have that one a lot but today it is really strong)
  • I only want to eat unhealthy things, but I’m eating healthy right now so I can’t (this could be the reason I’m grumpy).
  • People are exceedingly stupid today.

Movies, Movies, Movies

I saw some great movies over the long holiday weekend (4 days for me). I thought they were all great movies so it is hard to decide what movie I liked the best. Here are synopsis about all the movies from IMDB followed by my thoughts although they are very brief because I don't want to give anything away for those who have not seen them. Most things that I loved about the movies or the things that bothered me most are key plot points so I don't want to ruin anything.

THE READER opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair. Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from "The Odyssey," "Huck Finn" and "The Lady with the Little Dog." Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life - this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna's past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. THE READER is a story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

This movie was amazing, the acting was great and the story was moving. I left the theater thinking about this movie and why did the characters do what they did and what would I have done in that same situation. I think this is my favorite movie of the 4 I saw.

Writer Peter Morgan's legendary battle between Richard Nixon, the disgraced president with a legacy to save, and David Frost, a jet-setting television personality with a name to make, in the story of the historic encounter that changed both their lives. For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans (as well at a $600,000 fee). Likewise, Frost's team harbored doubts about their boss' ability to hold his own. But as cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted.

This movie was very interesting I had never seen or heard of David Frost before this movie. I was very interested to see the passion and the determination of the people during that time to get to the truth of the matter.

It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James, a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence.

I thought going in to this movie I would like it best, because one of my favorite actors (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and one of my new favorites (Amy Adams) is in it and the story looked very intriguing. On of my least favorite actress is also in this movie (Meryl Strep) she was good because she played someone I didn't like. This movie had some powerhouse moments but its conclusion was too vague and not as satisfying as I would have liked it to be.

After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board.

I didn't think I would like this movie as much as I did. Sean Penn is slightly irritating to me and the 70's hair and awful facial hair was very distracting in the trailer. This movie was very moving and yet very sad at the same time because of the horrible Prop 8 debacle that happened last year. It is sad to think that after all this time we really haven't evolved at all.

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

This was a really great story. It was uplifting and sad at the same time. I wanted to hug the little boy who portrayed Jamil as a child because he was so adorable. The way that the story was told; the intertwining past and present was very well done and gave the story its heart.

Shut up snow!

Holy crap I went into a movie at 4:45 this evening and the weather was raining and sometimes a little snow. When I came out at 7pm there was about 2 inches of snow on the ground!! It has been snowing none stop I would guess that their is a least 4 inches out there now, there was a bus stuck on the hill for over 3 hours and about 9 different cars got stuck at different times this evening. I am not looking forward to going to work in the morning. Why couldn't it have snowed this weekend when I didn't have to go anywhere!
